What are dental implants?
The part of your natural tooth that is visible is called a "crown." Your tooth root provides the support for you to bite and chew. The root is embedded in your jawbone and this gives the tooth a stable foundation.

A dental implant is a replacement tooth root, which provides a stable foundation for a replacement crown. Dental implants are actually tiny titanium posts which are inserted into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These anchors act as tooth root substitutes. Dr. Kaye surgically places the implants into the jawbone and the bone actually bonds with the titanium. Small posts are then attached to the implant which protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.

The Surgical Procedure
At our Center, the placement of dental implants can involve two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. Dr. Kaye’s patients may wear temporary replacement teeth and are able to continue eating during this time.

After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, depending on the type of implant, Dr. Kaye may begin the second procedure of uncovering the implant and attaching small posts which will act as anchors for the artificial teeth.  These posts protrude through the gum tissue.  Your restorative dentist will then attach the replacement teeth.  The entire procedure can take as little as six weeks, or more typically, up to four to six months.  Most of Dr. Kaye's patients are able to continue with their daily life activities during their healing phase.
